Owl Box Care Guidelines
Wood is a natural material that reacts to changes in humidity and temperature by expanding and contracting. As a result, small cracks may develop over time—this is a normal part of the aging process. To extend the lifespan of your owl box, apply a protective wood treatment such as Timber Life, Woodoc, or Nova once a year.
Cleaning and Maintenance Tips
Reapply varnish annually to maintain weather resistance.
Refresh the nesting material each year. Coarse sand is ideal, as it allows owls to shape a natural depression for egg-laying.
Inspect the box regularly for any signs of damage or deterioration.
Keep an eye on who’s using the box—other animals or birds may take up residence outside the owl breeding season. They often bring in debris like sticks or litter, which should be cleared out before owls will settle in.
